  • Q:

I just purchased two of the Corelle Livingware Winter Frost White 16 Piece Dinnerware Sets. The bowls and plates had a greasy/oily coating on them that was difficult to remove. I had to run them through the dishwasher twice. I saw this explanation on the FAQ page: "Before Corelle® products leave the factory, they are sprayed with an organic, non-toxic coating to help prevent damage during shipping. Wash your Corelle® ware with detergent and hot water before using it, or run it through a dishwasher cycle."
Can you please tell me what exactly the coating is? I know it says it's non-toxic, however, I am pregnant and I am concerned to eat off our dishes in case I didn't get it all off.
    Thank you.

Unfortunately we are unable to provide any specific information as to the makeup of the coating, as that information is proprietary. However, we can confirm that the coating is non-toxic and does not contain any animal byproducts or derivatives.

      A:

Yes, silverware can occasionally cause grey marks on Corelle. The marks can be removed with cleansers such as Barkeeper's Friend. It is a nonabrasive powdered cleanser available in the cleaning aisle at most retailers.

I have just bought 6 Corelle Winter Frost White 10 1/4" dinner plates because I believe them to be the lightest plates I can get which can also be used in the microwave. Can you confirm that this is true and also can you give me the weight of one individual plate? I have arthritis in my hands and find it difficult to lift ordinary plates.

      A:

We appreciate your concern. World Kitchen values the safety of its products and our consumers. Corelle is BPA free. Also, you will be comforted to know that we routinely test our Corelle® products for harmful lead content at certified, internationally-recognized third-party testing laboratories. The tests are conducted using protocols developed by the National Institute for Standards that form the basis for industry standards and regulatory testing mandates for lead leachate in dinnerware (lead content that is not a leachate poses no health risks). The tests take 24 hours or more to perform. Our testing confirms that Corelle® products comply with all applicable federal and state safety regulations, including those relating to lead and other heavy metals content, and they are safe to use in a manner consistent with their use and care instructions.

Corelle® products can be used for serving and re-heating food in microwaves or pre-heated conventional ovens up to 350° F (176° C). To warm empty dinnerware for serving, use pre-heated conventional ovens only. Porcelain and stoneware mugs are microwavable.
